Aerial lifts are very useful on the job, when there is a need to access utility lines or any aboveground worksites. However, when safety practices are not followed, hazardous situations can occur, causing incidents leading from minor injuries to fatalities. Electrocutions fall, machine collapse and machine tip-overs are the most common aerial lift incidents.
Keep in mind the following safety practices when working on aerial lifts:
Only trained personnel shall operate aerial lifts.
Inspect and operate aerial lifts according to manufacturer’s instructions and specifications.
Aerial lifts should be inspected before each use.
Do not exceed the basket’s maximum weight capacity, including tools and supplies.
The basket must be at its lowest possible elevation when moving the machine.
Use proper barricading and/or a ground person when operating in high traffic areas.
Use outriggers, if available.
Always ensure there is sufficient clearance at least 10 feet before moving under any overhead obstruction and working near live electrical lines.
Do not stand on platform handrails. Only stand on platform floor.
Employees shall not sit or climb on the edge of the basket or use planks, ladders, or other devices to gain greater working height.
Safety harnesses must be worn and tied-off inside the platform.
