Silica is the second most common mineral found in the earth’s crust. It can be found in soil, sand concrete, masonry, rock, granite, landscaping materials, etc. However, when turned into dust, crystalline silica can be extremely dangerous to your health. Breathing in crystalline silica can cause silicosis, which can be disabling or even fatal. In some cases, it takes 15-20 years for the effects to take place. As silicosis progresses, one may experience shortness of breath and suffer poor oxygen/carbon dioxide exchange.

OSHA has established a set of standards to identify, reduce and eliminate health hazards in the work place with regards to silica exposure. To reduce exposure, employers and workers should abide by the following:

Always be mindful of the potential health hazards crystalline silica can cause. Be cautious of your environment and the work you are doing, and always let a supervisor know if you believe there is a threat of crystalline silica exposure.
