Crystalline Silica Exposure Hazard Safety:

What is Silica? An educational video on Crystalline Silica started off Tuesday’s meeting. Crystalline Silica (Silica) is a chemical compound of Silicon Dioxide. Most commonly found in building materials. Which is mainly in the form of quartz. This compound becomes a threat when workers use the materials and cut, drill, or ground using powered equipment. Dust given off from the processing carries dangerous tiny particles of silica. Why is it Dangerous? Silica exposure can cause numerous health problems over time. Health issues include but are not limited to: -Silicosis -Lung Cancer -Tuberculosis -Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) The inhaled particles penetrate to the gas exchange area of the lungs. This causes most of the health issues listed above. Prevention Wear the proper PPE! Respirators are part of PPE for this specific reason. Grab the proper PPE if exposure is a risk. Check the seal of the mask is correct on your face. Your risk of inhaling particles is high when equipment is worn improperly . When the equipment is faulty or broken, DO NOT WEAR IT. Faulty equipment will expose you to silica particles. Lastly, it is always pertinent to have yearly check-ups with your physician. Check-up appointments will keep you informed with your health. It will also help maintain a healthy life. To check out more safety information on Silica, please visit Silica-Safe.org.

It Wasn’t Me

Closing the meeting was a humorous video targeting the “Wasn’t Me” issue all companies face. The video illustrated the importance of fessing up to your mistakes in the work area. Our HR manager spoke on this subject in depth. He voiced his concerns on how the “Wasn’t Me” issue can cause major safety risks.  It could  even cause accidents. As a company, we reiterated the importance of mistakes and learning from them.  Written By: Teresa Reeves This was another safety meeting for the books!Check out more of our blogs at Cogbill Blogs or check in with us on our social media pages: Facbook, Twitter & LinkedIn
