General Fabrication Shop Safety
In the Metal Fabrication Industry, safety is the most important element of your job. If you are not cautious and follow good safety practices, injury, or even death, can easily occur. Keep in mind the following general fabrication shop safety practices to keep you and others safe.
1. Wear appropriate PPE for your job
Glasses/Face shield
Appropriate Footwear (ex: Steel Toe Boots)
Gloves (ex: Rubber, Leather, Welding, Etc.)
Long Sleeves
FRP Clothing
2. Equipment Safety
Be properly trained on how to use the equipment you will be working with
Inspect before each use
Don’t remove guards or covers
Know where the emergency stop is
Be aware of your surroundings
Keep equipment and work area clean
3. Electrical
Inspect cords for damage
Make sure cords are grounded
If you suspect an issue, do not use. Contact someone with electrical qualifications to fix the issue
4. Compressed Gases
Store Properly
Keep containers labeled so they can be easily identified
Handle with care to prevent a reaction from the gases
5. Fire Prevention
Make sure fire extinguishers are in an easily located spot
Use fire blankets/shields to prevent welding sparks from getting on flammable surfaces
Keep flammable liquid in appropriate storage containers. Handle with care.
6. Welding Safety
Wear appropriate PPE
Make sure you are working in a properly ventilated area
Be aware of people in your area to not get sparks on them
