Inside Look at Neoprene Plastic

Neoprene Plastic

This can include size, shape, standard, adjust-ability, and even padding. Neoprene is a type of plastic formed from various types of synthetic rubber. This plastic is used in many industries. In our own field of industrial fabrication, Neoprene is used as a padding for pipe supports, clamps, hangers, and other applications. It is glued onto the top of support or inside a clamp to act as a pad between the metal of the support or clamp and the metal pipe being supported. This makes the fit of the pipe onto the support snug and also helps keep the pipe stable from jolting.

Reasons to Use Neoprene

The six reasons below are just a few important explanations for the use of Neoprene, hence rendering using this plastic a smart decision in the industry.

  • It resists degradation from the sun, ozone and weather

  • It performs well in contact with oils and numerous chemicals

  • It remains useful over a wide range of temperatures

  • It displays outstanding physical toughness

  • It resists burning better than pure hydrocarbon rubbers

  • It provides outstanding resistance to damage caused by flexing and twisting

The Process

  • First: The plastic is ordered in strips. Once a pipe support or clamp is ready to be fitted with Neoprene, a strip of the plastic is selected and measured.

  • Second: The strip is cut to the length of the top of the pipe support or the inside of the clamp.

  • Third: The strip is glued using hypoxia glue. This is done by putting a pipe on top of the glued strip and anchoring it to the pipe stand or clamp for a period of time to allow the glue to cure. This helps the strip stick and form appropriately to the support or clamp.

  • Fourth: The support or clamp is then set aside for 24 hours to cure and properly form.
